setting up the telephone app with iinet

I recently switch to a naked broadband plan with iinet and have consequently switched to the world of VOIP telephony.

To access calls im currently using the nifty minimalist Telephone mac app by Alexei Kuznetsov.

While setting up the app is relatively straightforward, i did have some teething troubles setting it up to work with iinet, so thought i would share the solution here.

To set up your account go to Telephone > Preferences > Accounts. You will then want to fill in the following information on the Account information page:

  • Full Name: your name for the service e.g. your first and last name. You can put anything here really, but best to keep it descriptive.

  • Domain: iinetphone.iinet.net.au

  • User Name: your telephone number including area code.

  • Password: Your VoIP password issued by iinet.

The following part is what tripped me up initially. You will want to switch to the Advanced pane on the Accounts page and enter the Registry Server address which takes the form sip.state.iinet.net.au where state is the Australian state or territory where you live. For example, i live in South Australia so my Registry Server address is sip.sa.iinet.net.au.

Some additional resources for setting up iinet VoIP include:

  • The whirlpool iinet netphone and iitalk setup instructions page
